Federation of Local History Societies

Local History Project with National Library

(A joint FULS/FLHS Project)

Summary and background

The National Library of Ireland has asked the two Federations of Local History Societies to join with them in a project to input data to the main electronic catalogue of the library.
The data in question is the details of two projects which the Federation for Ulster Local Studies and The Federation of Local History Societies completed jointly a number of years ago, namely "A project to Retake 1000 of the Pictures in The Lawrence Collection” and a later project called "Our Own Place" which reflected contemporary life in Ireland.
These projects were carried out with the cooperation of local history societies in the 32 counties of Ireland.
Both of these projects were lodged with the library and the Ulster Museum in Belfast as a paper catalogue actual photographs and film. The catalogue contains the names of the local history photographers and researchers who took part in the projects as well as details of the scenes and photographs.

When we complete the conversion of this data to electronic form, the library will scan the photographs and integrate them with the data. All of this wonderful archive of material will be then available online through the National Library website.
The work to date appears on the NLI website.

Up to five people are working every day from Monday to Friday 10.00a.m. to 4.00p.m.
Theyl work in the Manuscript reading room of the library on laptops provided by the Llibrary.

From 20th Feb to the end of March will be the first phase of the project. In the course of this, we will review the progress and should be in a position to request more volunteers
